Shaving soaps create a richer, deeper lather and deliver increased hydration when compared to other shave prep products, such as foams, creams and oils.  The oil is removed from the whiskers by the shaving soap in combination with the brush and allows for water to penetrate the whiskers.  When whiskers are more hydrated, the razor is able to cut them without pulling.
 
As they are not dispensed from an aerosol shaving soaps also more environmentally friendly than their counterparts.
